October 2011

  • The project’s kick-off meeting and the 1st Project Management Board Meeting were hosted by HUA (Kallithea, GR) on October 25-26, 2011. Ass. Prof. Dr. C. Pavlopoulos, Head of the Geography Department of HUA, and member of the research group, gave the welcome speech of the event. Dr A. Koutsiolioutsou, Monitoring Expert of Astrale GEIE – Prospect C&S, presented the Common Provisions and the Key Issues for the successful implementation of a LIFE project. Ass. Prof. Dr. K.-E. Lasaridi, PM explicitly presented the actions of the WASP Tool project. The presentation of the Project is provided here.
  • The website of the WASP Tool project was a milestone of the Project, set to be delivered by November 2011. Owing to its disseminative efficacy and accessibility to the public, the PMB decided to develop it a month earlier than the predetermined date of delivery. As a result, the website http://galaxy.hua.gr/~WASPtool was up and running by the end of October 2011. The content of the website is presented in both Greek and English.


November 2011

  • The coordinating beneficiary of the WASP Tool Project participated as a project developer in EWWR 2011 (a LIFE+ Information and Communication project), which run on 20 – 27 November 2011. More specifically, it participated in the Event "Reducing Waste. Solutions and Prospects", organised by the Municipality of Acharnes, on 23 November 2011, in the frame of the "European Week for Waste Reduction" (EWWR). The Municipality of Acharnes was the Greek Project Developer for 2011. In this event, the coordinator presented the WASP Tool project, with emphasis on food waste prevention. DEDISA and MoP in couple with ENVITECH, organised demonstration events on home composting process and food waste prevention, respectively.


December 2011

  • The development of the State-of-the Art on waste prevention (Action 2 of the WASP Tool project) has started. 


January 2012

  • Within the framework of the Action 2, concerning the State-of-the-Art review, the following activities are carried out: 
    - Identification and evaluation of different waste prevention activities, 
    - Investigation and selection of waste prevention assessment methods 
    - Analysis of the waste production characteristics and the existing waste management systems in the pilot areas (Chania, Heraklio and Paralimni) On that basis key-persons in the pilot areas were interviewed, while 600 questionnaires on the knowledge and attitude of citizens were distributed (progress indicators). 
  • The WASP Tool project was presented in a workshop on organic waste, organised by the Environmental Education Centre of Lavrio, on 25 January 2012.


February 2012

  • Aiming at raising awareness on Waste Prevention, the Project coordinator, Dr. K. Lasaridi suggested to the organising committee of the International Conference on “Solid Waste 2013” to add in their programme a Workshop on Waste Prevention. The Chairman of the Conference, Prof. J. W.C. Wong agreed and therefore the objectives, achievements and results of the WASP Tool project will be diffused within policy makers, academics and researchers in a wide international audience in the fast developing area of Asia.  


March 2012

  • In March 2012, EPEM and ENVITECH, with the participation of HUA, had completed more than the 90% or the State-of-the-Art report on waste prevention (Action 2). 
  • The implementation of Action 3, concerning the design and the development of the WASP-Tool has started. 
  • Within the framework of networking, a contact with the ACR+ has been made.
  • DEDISA applied for Project Organiser in Greece, within the “European Week for Waste Reduction”. 
  • The 1st Newsletter of the WASP Tool project was produced in both Greek and English.


April 2012

  • The 2nd Project Management Board meeting was organised by DEDISA (Chania, Crete). Τhree TV broadcasting channels and one newspaper responded to the relevant  press release.
  • The State-of-the-Art report on waste prevention is completed.
  • The selection process of the pilot areas has started. 
  • The “European Week for Waste Reduction - EWWR” project accepted the application of DEDISA for the organisation of the EWWR in Greece. 


May 2012

  • The WASP Tool project is communicated in the ISWA Beacon Conference “Waste Prevention and Recycling”, 30 May – 1 June 2012, Vienna. 


June 2012

  • The selection process of the pilot areas in Crete (Greece) and Paralimni (Cyprus) is completed.
  • Part of the results of the WASP Tool project were presented in the following conferences: 
    - ORBIT 2012 - 8th International Conference on «Global assessmnet for organic resources and waste management», 12-14 June 2012, France (two oral presentations). 
    - ATHENS 2012 - International Conference on «Sustainable Solid Waste Management», 28 – 29 June 2012, Athens, Greece (two oral presentations). The ATHENS 2012 Conference was organised within the framework of the LIFE Drywaste project, as an event of the celebration of the LIFE 20th Anniversary. 


July 2012

  • Preparatory activities for the assessement of micro-composition of waste in the pilot areas have started. 
  • The participation of the Minucipality of Paralimni and ENVITECH in the WASP Tool project was announced through the Cypriot newspaper «Χαραυγή». 


August 2012

  • The design and development of the WASP Tool software is proceeding according to plan. The construction of the knowledge base and the rule base has been started.


September 2012

  • The WASP Tool Inception Report was delivered to the Project Monitoring Expert, Mr. Doikos, and Herve Martin. 
  • Tasks for the analysis of the composition of the waste in the pilot areas have begun.
  • The WASP Tool logo was created according to the Project’s dissemination plan. An informative leaflet in English was produced.
  • The website address was changed into http://wasptool.hua.gr , which is considered a more easily memorable one. Typing the old website address, the user is redirected automatically to the new one. 
  • The 2nd Newsletter (in both English and Greek) was produced.
  • Part of the results of the WASP Tool project implementation were presented in the International Conference “Hazardous and Industrial Waste Management”, which was held on 12-14 September 2012, in Chania (Crete- Greece). 


October 2012

  • The 3rd Project Management Board meeting was held on 4-5 October 2012 (City Hall, Municipality of Paralimni, CY). 
  • Tasks for the organisation of a reduction week by DEDISA, within the Project “European Week for Waste Reduction- EWWR”, are in progress. DEDISA’ website will host a webpage dedicated to the EWWR. Harokopio University will participate in the events as a project developer, organising seminars in two Environmental Education Centres in Attica prefecture. 
  • The Project Management Board meeting in Cyprus occasioned the organisation for the open workshop «Waste Reduction Practices in Insular Areas», on 4 October 2012, in the City Hall of Paralimni (Cyprus). The project co-ordinator Dr. K. Lasaridi (HUA) as well as Dr. A. Zorpas (ENVITECH), thoroughly presented the WASP – Tool project. Guest speaker: Mr Ch. Theopemptou, the Environment Commissioner of Cyprus. Attendees: 123 citizens. Two members of the Cyprian House of Parliament attended the workshop. 


November 2012

  • Within the frame of the European Week for Waste Reduction (LIFE+) and in accordance with the Networking plan of WASP Tool project, DEDISA and Harokopio University organised, respectively, composting demonstrations and seminars – workshops on waste prevention (with emphasis on food waste, packaging waste and Extended Producer Responsibility). Composting demonstrations were attended by Elementary school students and members of an environmental group in Apokoronas (Crete). Seminars-workshops on waste prevention were given in the Environmental Educational Centres of Lavrio and Drapetsona (attendees: 100 school teachers). Local press in Crete and Lavrio covered the events. 
  • The Harokopio University, the Directorates of Secondary Education of the D administrational division of Athens, and the Environmental Education Centres of Lavrio, Drapetsona and Argyroupolis, joinlty established on 25th of October, a local network for environmental education, entitled «How can I reduce my waste?». Harokopio University envisions that its participation in the aforementioned network will enhance the dissemination and transferability of the WASP Tool project and the concept of waste prevention. 


December 2012

  • Web 2.0 tools, such facebook, twitter, LinkedIn) are being developed in order to create interactive spaces for the «Waste Prevention Network».
  • The production of an extra newsletter dedicated to the «European Week for Waste Reduction» and its release by the end of December, is considered essential, as the WASP-Tool beneficiaries organised a range of relative actions. 
  • Results of WASP Tool project were presented in the 4rd International Conference of the Hellenic Solid Waste Management Association (30 November – 1 December). The WASP Tool project was also presented in the Networking Event of the «Regions for Recycling- R4R» project (European Regional Development Fund and Interreg IVC programme) in Athens (12 December 2012). 


January 2013

  • A demo of the WASP Tool software has been prepared and will be presented during the visit of the external monitoring expert. 
  • A book with recipes, based on the Mediterranean cuisine, using left-overs, is being prepared by Municipality of Paralimni and ENVITECH. 
  • Preparation for the compost quality assessment (chemical and microbiological laboratory analysis).


February 2013

  • An experiment for compost quality assessment (chemical and microbiological laboratory analysis) is on track.
  • The Waste Prevention Network platform is on track.  
  • On 13 February 2013 the WASP-Tool project and some of its results were presented in the Workshop “Waste Prevention” in Sivitanidios Technical School. On 14 February 2013 a  seminar on Waste Prevention was organised in Harokopio University, by the local network for environmental education, entitled «How can I reduce my waste?» in the framework of the WASP-Tool. On 16 February 2013, a presentation on home composting was given by the WASP-Tool Project Management Team in the 10th Elementary School in Aghios Dimitrios, in the occasion of a seminar for educators. On 24 February 2013 a representative of the WASP-Tool project management team presented and demonstrated the home composting process in Rhodes (the event was organised by the NGO “Aithria”). The magazine “K”of the “Kathimerini” newspaper presented the WASP-Tool and the food waste issue. 


March 2013

  • The 4th Project Management Board meeting was held on 29 March 2013 in Athens (Harokopio University). The annual visit of the external monitoring expert Dr. A. Koutsolioutsou was held on 28th of  March 2013. Presentations: Harokopio University, DEDISA, ESDAK, EPEM, ENVITECH and Municipality of Paralimni
  • The construction of the WASP Tool knowledge base, rule base and interface are completed. 
  • Tasks for the analysis of the composition of the waste in the pilot areas are completed (DEDISA, ESDAK and Municipality of Paralimni). 
  • Preparation the food waste and home composting interventions have started. 
  • A newsletter is produced and will be distributed on Monday 1 April. 


April 2013

  • The food waste prevention intervention has been started. The home composting intervention has been started. Compost bins have been bought by the ESDAK (GR) and Municipality of Paralimni (CY). DEDISA (GR) and ESDAK (GR) have ordered the compost bins. Municipality of Paralimni and ENVITECH have organised (11.04.2013) a workshop for raising awareness on the waste prevention interventions of the project.


May 2013

  • The WASP Tool is developed. Trials are running. 
  • The development of the WASP-Tool as well as some results of the project were presented in the International Conference on Solid Waste, Hong Kong (ICSWHK 2013, 5 – 8 May 2013). Upon suggestion of the co-ordinator Dr. K. Lasaridi, the ICSWHK 2013 hosted a workshop on waste prevention. Dr Lasaridi was one of the two speakers. The workshop was organised in order to communicate the concept of waste prevention and the WASP Tool project. This dissemination / networking activity did not incur any cost to the project, as Dr Lasaridi was invited speaker.


June 2013

  • The workshops on home composting were held (a) on 05/06/2013 by ESDAK and (b) on 08/06/2013 by DEDISA. At the end of the workshops, the home composting bins were distributed to the participants. 
  • Some results of the project were presented in the International Conference on Environmental Management, Engineering, Planning and Economics (CEMEPE 2013), 24 – 28 June 2013).


July 2013


  • A  beta version of the WASP Tool is up (in the project’s website) and running. Trials are running. 
  • The food waste intervention is on track. To assess the intervention, food diaries are distributed. 
  • The home composting intervention is in progress. Compost diaries are distributed. 
  • Information about the WASP Tool project in the ECOWEB was updated. ECOWEB is an initiative by the European Commission to increase the uptake of research results from Framework Programme, CIP and LIFE+ projects. The networking list of the WASP Tool was enriched. The Network Communication Platform of the WASP Tool project is on track. 



August 2013


  • The Mid-term report was completed.



September 2013


  • Regarding networking with other projects, the WASP Tool project participated in the final workshop of the Control-C-Waste project (LIFE09 ENV/GR/294). The Network Communication Platform of the WASP Tool project is on track. 
  • The design of the notice boards has been completed. Their installation will be completed by mid-October. 
  • The newsletter will be distributed on 01/10/2013.
  • Results of the WASP Tool project implementation were presented in the 13th International Conference On Environmental Science and Technology – CEST 2013 (5-7/9/2013, Athens). 



October 2013


  • The 5th Project Management Board meeting was held in Heraklio (Crete, GR). The 5th Project Management Board meeting in Heraklio occasioned the organisation of a 2-days event (open workshops) for the dissemination of the WASP Tool project and the communication of certain waste prevention actions (the pilot waste prevention actions, office waste reduction etc). A seminar on office waste prevention was attende by the project’s personnel. 
  • ENVITECH and EPEM assisted the three participating LAs to implement the WASP-Tool and – accordingly - develop their Waste Prevention Strategies. According to them, the priority waste prevention actions for each LA partner are the following: 
    - Home composting (DEDISA, ESDAK, MoP), 
    - Food waste prevention (DEDISA, ESDAK, MoP),  
    - Promotion of reusable shopping bags (DEDISA, ESDAK, MoP),
    - Reuse of books (DEDISA), reuse of clothes/shoes (ESDAK), reduction of single-use plastic water bottles (MoP). 
  • The event “Waste Prevention Strategies on Local Authorities level in the framework of the Directive 2008/98” was organised on 17 October 2013, by  the Municipality of Paralimni and ENVITECH LTD.



November 2013

  • The WASP Tool project was presented in the Reinnova Conference (Barcelona, 27-30/11/2013).
  • The national (Greece) newspaper  “Realnews” (section Realplanet) presented the WASP-Tool and the food waste issue.
  • On 2 November 2013 a Livelink event for public awareness regarding waste prevention actions (with focus on the pilot ones) was broadcasted live from the local radio station of Paralimni (CY) Radio State 106.7 FM. The event took place at the Main Square of St. George and was jointly organized by the Municipality of Paralimni and ENVITECH LTD.


December 2013 

  • The food waste intervention is on track. Food diaries and questionnaires have been filled in by the participating households and delivered to Harokopio University for data analysis. During the Christmas events (6 /12/13 – 6/1/14) in the Municipality of Paralimni, Cyprus, a kiosk was granted to the team of the Wasp Tool project (Municipality of Paralimni and Envitech Ltd), with the aim to raise awareness on food waste prevention. Leaflets and booklets with recipes using left -overs were distributed to the visitors. 
  • The home composting intervention is on track. The three participating LAs visited the participating households to monitor compost bin utilisation and enhance the intention for bin use. HUA supervises and assesses the home composting activity. 
  • The 3rd waste prevention action, the promotion of reusable shopping bags (common for all three LAs), is on track for all participating LAs. 
  • The 4th waste prevention action – i.e. Reuse of Books for DEDISA, reuse of clothes for ESDAK and the reduction of single-use plastic bottles for Municipality of Paralimni – is on track. 
  • The local (Greece. Crete) newspaper “Chaniotika Nea” presented the 4th waste prevention action of DEDISA (reuse of books) 
  • A technical publication presenting some of the results of food waste prevention action was accepted for publication. More specifically: “Abeliotis K., Lasaridi K. and Chroni C. (2014). Attitudes and behaviour of Greek households regarding food waste prevention. Waste Management & Research.”
  • Regarding networking, on 19 December 2013 Harokopio University (Dr. K. Abeliotis) participated in a live broadcasting about food waste on Garage TV organised by the project “Καλύτερη Ζωή” (“Better life” – an initiative of WWF Hellas and the NGO “Boroume”). January 2014 

  • All four (4) pilot waste prevention interventions are on track. More specifically:  
    - Food waste intervention (common for all three LAs): Data of food waste diaries and questionnaires are being analysed by Harokopio University.
    - Home composting intervention (common for all three LAs): The three participating LAs visited the participating households to monitor compost bin utilisation and enhance the intention for bin use. Experimental work is being conducted by Harokopio University to assess microbiological safety and quality of compost. 
    - Promotion of reusable shopping bags (common for all three LAs): Two super market chains (namely, “Halkiadakis” and “Phaistos”) in Heraklio (Crete) signed a commitment to ESDAK, to make a discount of 1% anytime a consumer uses the reusable shopping bags of the WASP Tool project. 
    - Reuse of Books for DEDISA: DEDISA set four “Exchange Library” kiosks in: a) Municipal Market Square, b) 1866 Square, c) Liberty Square and d) Souda Square.
    - Reuse of clothes for ESDAK: The preparation of 22 kiosks for the collection of reusable clothes and shoes started.
    - Reduction of single-use plastic bottles for Municipality of Paralimni: 1,450 reusable bottles will be distributed to Elementary School students of Paralimni. 


February 2014

  • On 21-22 February 2014, the WASP Tool project as well as the progress of the pilot intervention on food waste prevention, were presented (by the team of Harokopio University) in a seminar for educators, entitled “Management of Municipal Waste”. The seminar was organised by the Environmental Education Centre of Elefsina. 
  • On 25 February 2014, Harokopio University organised a home composting demonstration to 35 High Schools students. 
  • On 26 February, the progress of the pilot intervention on food waste prevention was presented in an event on Home Composting in the Municipality of Aghios Dimitrios. 


March 2014 

  • All four pilot waste prevention interventions are on track. More specifically:  
    - Food waste intervention (common for all three LAs): ESDAK organised a raising-awareness event (concerning all four pilot waste prevention activities) in Heraklion on 22 March 2014, and have announced the organisation of a seminar on food waste prevention, on April 5 and April 7, 2014.  
    - Home composting intervention (common for all three LAs): Compost samples are sent to Harokopio University in order to assess their microbiological safety and quality. 
    - Promotion of reusable shopping bags (common for all three LAs): The activity is on track. ESDAK distributed 10.000 reusable shopping bags on 22 March 2014 (during the aforementioned awareness-raising event). 
  • Part of the results of the project’s implementation will be presented in the International Conference “ADAPTtoCLIMATE” (Cyprus, 27-28 March, 2014, organised in the framework of the LIFE+ project CYPADAPT (LIFE10 ENV/CY/000723).
  • The WASP Tool project was presented in the 2nd Southern Europe Multi-Stakeholder Regional Platform Meeting of the “FUSIONS” FP7 project, on 14 March 2014 (Maroussi, Greece). 
  • The newsletter of the WASP Tool project will be released on 31 March 2014. 
  • On 12 March 2014, the WASP-Tool system was presented in the 3rd Sustainability Week at the American College of Greece “Health, Waste & Technology” (10 – 12 March 2014, organised by the American College of Greece- DEREE). 


April 2014 

  • The 6th Project Management Board meeting was held in Paralimni (CY) on 3 – 4 April 2014. 
  • ESDAK organised a seminar on food waste prevention, on April 5 and April 7, 2014.  DEDISA organised a raising-awareness event - seminar on food waste prevention, on April 12, 2014.
  • Dr K. Lasaridi (coordinator) was invited by the FUSIONS project team as speaker at the Social Camp FUSIONS Work Package 3 dedicated to food waste policies, which was held in Bologna on the April 8, 2014.
  • A home composting demonstration was organized in the 4rth High School of the Municipality of Aghios Dimitrios (Attica). 


June 2014 

  • On 10 June 2014 the annual evaluation visit of the external monitoring team was held in Kallithea (Harokopio University), click here.
  • Representatives of the WASP Tool project participated in the Green Week, which was organised in Bruxelles, on 3 – 5 June 2014. 
  • Part of the WASP Tool project results was presented in the following conferences: 1. ΟΡΒΙΤ 2014, 26-28 June 2014, Hungary, 2. PRE XII Skiathos, 29 June – 3 July 2014, Skiathos, Greece.
  • The Life Cycle Assessment of the pilot action started. 


July 2014

  • The WASP-Tool was presented in the annual meeting of Solid Waste Management Authorities, which was held in Syros (GR), on 4 July 2014. 


August 2014 

  • The refinement of the WASP Tool and the update of the Waste Prevention Strategies have been started on the basis of the results of Action 5.
  • All four pilot waste prevention interventions are on track as foreseen. Most of their results have been analysed. 


September 2014 

  • The 7th (Final) Project Management Board meeting was held in Chania (Crete, GR) on 1 –  2 September 2014. 
  • Editing of the After LIFE Communication Plan is completed.
  • The final workshop of the WASP Tool project, entitled «Prevention of Waste Generation: Potentialities and constraints in the context of integrated waste management – lessons learnt from the LIFE+ WASP Tool project”, was organized in Harokopio University on 23 September 2014, in Kallithea (Athens, GR).
